11.3stabilisers Construction Flashcards
What are three formats of a horizontal stabiliser can be used?
Fixed stabiliser, a stabilator and a variable incidence tailplane
What is a fixed stabiliser?
comprises two fixed aerofoils, joined together by a structural centre section that has attachment holes for bolting to the aircraft’s fuselage.
What is a stabilator?
this is a one-piece all-moveable tail that pivots up and down from a central hinge point. This type of design requires no elevator control surfaces to be fitted on the trailing edge as with the fixed stabiliser
What is a variable incidence tailplane?
is simply referred to as the ‘stabiliser’, is also a one-piece all-moveable tail. Elevators are attached to the trailing edge of the stabiliser and are positioned by the control column. A nose-up command causes the elevators to move upwards
How and where are vertical stabilisers mounted onto the fuselage?
Via solid anchor points and high tension bolts on the aft fuselage along the centre line of the longitudinal axis
What to vertical stabilisers give the aircraft?
Directional stability
What is the construction of the stabilisers?
Utilisation of spars, ribs, stringers and skin
