11.3 Fuselage Wing& Undercarriage Attachments Flashcards
Where can wings be attached?
Either above or below the fuselage
Why are strong fuselage frames or bulkheads used in the attachment areas?
To carry loads from the wings and to transfer the loads to the remainder of the fuselage through longerons and beams
How is the vertical fin attached?
Bolt fittings on a frame member or bulkhead
Where can horizontal stabilisers be attached?
Directly to the vertical stabiliser or to the fuselage frame that are strengthened in the attached areas
Where are the engine pylons attached?
On the wings
The pylon structural members are called?
Spars, they include an upper, middle and lower
What do pylons transfer?
They transfer thrust generated by the engines to the airframe via wing spars
On many aircraft the landing gear is attached to the wing, what is the attachment point?
The attachment point is the wing spars or a framework attached to the spars
What must landing gear be able to withstand?
The forces of landing when the aircraft is fully loaded
What are wing spars function?
To support the entire weight of the aircraft while in flight
What might be used at the spar attach point for support?
An adaptive built up structure
Why do wheel wells have to let the gear retract?
To reduce drag
