[01] Atrial Fibrillation Basics Flashcards
What is atrial fibrillation (AF)?
A common cardiac arrhythmia.
AF - Initials
Atrial Fibrillation
What is the estimated prevalence of AF in 2030?
12.1 million
What are the health risks associated with AF?
- Increased risk of stroke
- Increased risk of heart failure
- High morbidity and mortality rate
How is AF categorized based on duration?
- Paroxysmal (≤ 7 days)
- Persistent (> 7 days)
- Long-standing persistent (≥ 1 year)
What is paroxysmal AF?
AF that lasts for ≤ 7 days
What is persistent AF?
AF that lasts for > 7 days
What is long-standing persistent AF?
AF that lasts for ≥ 1 year
What is the most common cardiac arrhythmia worldwide?
Atrial Fibrillation (AF)
What is morbidity?
The condition of being diseased or unhealthy
What is mortality rate?
The number of deaths in a particular population over a specific period of time
What is arrhythmia?
A condition in which the heartbeat is irregular, too fast, or too slow
What is heart failure?
A chronic condition where the heart can’t pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs
What is a stroke?
A sudden disruption in blood supply to the brain, causing brain damage
What remains poorly understood about AF?
The determinant trigger for the progression from paroxysmal to persistent AF
