Valvular Disease (Cardiac Diseases) Flashcards
1
Q
importance of valvular disease
A
- valves ensure unidirectional flow
- if valves defective, blood will flow in 2 directions or will not flow at all
- mitral and aortic valve most commonly impacted (L vent highest pressure)
2
Q
etiology
A
- ischemic damage to heart in area of valves
- degenerative changes (inc age)
- congenital birth defects
3
Q
2 forms of valvular disease
A
- stenotic valve
- regurgitant valve
4
Q
stenotic valve
A
- impeded flow
- valves are sticky and stiff
- do not open
5
Q
regurgitant valve
A
- backflow of blood
- valves are floppy
- do not close properly
6
Q
consequences of valvular disease
A
- alter cardiac blood flow
- inc workload (dec CO)
7
Q
Tx
A
- least invasive Tx first
- some drugs inc or dec workload
- drug based on circumstances
- aim to maintain current Fx or inc Fx
- Sx (repair/replace valve)
