Dehydration (Fluid Electrolyte & Acid-Base Imbalance) Flashcards
1
Q
dehydration
A
- volume deficit
- dec interstitial and intravascular fluids
- kidney not Fx properly / losing fluid:
- draw from IS and cells
- leads to dehydrated cells
2
Q
causes of dehydration
A
- inadequate intake of fluid
- 3rd spacing
- perspiration
- filtration in kidney
- vomiting/diarrhea
3
Q
Third Spacing
A
- there are 2 normal spaces for fluid in the ECF (interstitial space & intravascular space)
- 3rd space = transcellular space (abn)
- Ex: fluid in abd, bleeding into joint/body cavity, pleural space
- fluid difficult to get into 3rd space and difficult to get out of 3rd space
- fluid accumulates in transcellular space and is not readily exchanged
