Immunodeficiency Flashcards
immunodeficiency
- compromised IR (partial/complete)
- predisposes to disease
primary form of immunodeficiency
- genetic/congenital
- failure to develop
- ex. incomplete thymus development
secondary form of immunodeficiency
- acquired (post-natal)
- ex. immunosuppressive drugs; AIDS
types of immunodeficiency disorders
- B cell disorders
- T cell disorders
- T & B disorders
- disorders of phagocytosis
- complement disorders
B-cell disorders
impaired immunoglobulin (Ab) production (humoral immunodeficiency)
T-cell disorders
impaired T cell Fx & cell-mediated response
T & B disorders
poor/no immune Fx (defects in humoral & cell-mediated immunity)
disorders of phagocytosis
defect with phagocytic system make those affected prone to infections by bacteria
phagocytic system
granulocytes (phagocytic system) migrate to site of infection via chemotaxis & aggregate around affected tissue, envelop invading microorganisms & generate microbicidal substances to kill ingested pathogens
complement disorders
inhibit innate/non-specific immune response (chemotaxis, opsonization & phagocytosis)
alterations in normal lvls of complement/absence leads to…
enhanced susceptibility to infectious diseases & autoimmune diseases (ex. Lupus)
Tx of immunodeficiency
- replacement therapy
- stem cell transplant
replacement therapy
giving pt’s Abs intravenously in hospital –> enhances immune Fx
stem cell transplant
- repopulate bone marrow & reestablish hematopoiesis
- collected from bone marrow or peripheral blood
