Cardiomyopathy (Cardiac Diseases) Flashcards
1
Q
cardiomyopathy
A
- cardiac muscle disorder
- different types based on size, shape, Fx
2
Q
types
A
- hypertrophic
- dilated/congestive
3
Q
hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
A
- inc hypertrophy (size) esp of L. ventricle
- thickened interventricular septum (restricts aortic valve –> blood can’t leave L. ventricle = dec CO)
- chamber cannot fill w/ as much blood d/t small size = dec CO
4
Q
hypertrophic etiology
A
- autosomal dominant gene transferred to offspring (50%)
- idiopathic (50%)
5
Q
hypertrophic mnfts
A
- in most cases, systolic Fx normal so asympt (can lead to sudden death)
- if symptoms present: dyspnea, angina, syncope, palpitations
6
Q
hypertrophic Tx
A
- neg inotrope (reduce workload of heart)
- Sx: septal ablation (destroy IV septum)
7
Q
dilated/congestive cardiomyopathy
A
- wall is stretched (loses elasticity)
- blood fills chamber, pools there and moves out slowly
- enormous ventricular enlargement
8
Q
dilated/congestive etiology
A
- genetic & enviro factors
- dec elasticity –> dec CO –> dec EF
- eventually leads to heart failure
9
Q
dilated/congestive Tx
A
- symptomatic management
- dec cardiac workload: diuretics & beta blockers
