Edema (Fluid Electrolyte & Acid-Base Imbalance) Flashcards
1
Q
edema
A
- excessive/abn accumulation of fluid in the interstitial space
- fluid comes to IS from blood
- can be life-threatening if it occurs in certain places (brain, lungs, heart)
2
Q
causes of edema
A
- increased capillary hydrostatic pressure
- decreased colloid osmotic pressure
- increased capillary permeability
- obstructed lymph flow
3
Q
increased capillary hydrostatic pressure
A
- inc vascular vol
- venous obstruction
- dec arteriolar resistance
4
Q
decreased colloid osmotic pressure
A
- inc loss of plasma proteins
- dec production of plasma proteins
5
Q
increased capillary permeability
A
- inflammation
- allergic rxn
- malignancy
- tissue injury and burns
6
Q
obstructed lymph flow
A
- malignant obstruction of lymphatic structures
- surgical removal of lymph nodes
