hypothyroidism
A
- primary: thyroid –> 95% of hypothyroidism
- secondary: pituitary
- tertiary: hypothalamus
- etiology: autoimmunity or iatrogenic (radiation and Sx for hyperfx –> hypofx)

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
A
- autoimmunity targeting gland (Ab + T cells) –> inflm
- antithyroid Abs block TSH binding (produced d/t autoimmunity)
- lymphocyte infiltrates destroy gland and induce atrophy of gland –> fibrosis
- approx 90% are middle aged women

mnfts of Hashimonot’s Thyroiditis
A
- hypometabolic state
- myxedema (mucoid secretion in dermis of skin –> swelling of skin –> waxy appearance)
- cold sensitivity (d/t less heat production)
- fatigue (d/t less ATP production)
- dec CO
- dec CNS Fx
- weak muscle action
- inc weight (not metabolizing nutrients –> put into storage)

Tx of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
A
- replacement therapy (T4 daily) –> ex. Synthroid
