Aneurysm (Cardiovascular Disorders) Flashcards
1
Q
aneurysm
A
- an excessive localized enlargement of an artery caused by weakening/degenerative changes of the artery wall
- permanent dilation of an artery (irreversible)
- NOT vasodilation
2
Q
risk factors
A
- atherosclerosis
- HTN if untreated
- congenital defects (weakened vessel walls)
- aging (tissue degeneration)
3
Q
forms of aneurysms
A
- true
- false
4
Q
true form aneurysm
A
- vessel wall intact
- >50% inc in diameter
5
Q
false form aneurysm
A
- wall compromised, not intact
- supported by external structures such as muscle, fat, etc.
6
Q
types of aneurysms
A
- fusiform
- saccular
- dissecting
7
Q
fusiform type
A
bulge on both sides of vessel (bilateral)
8
Q
saccular type
A
bulge on one side forming what looks like a sac
9
Q
dissecting type
A
dissects layer of walls (blood goes in b/w vessel wall layers)
10
Q
Cmplx of aneurysms
A
- rupture/burst of weakened vessels (primary cmplx/in brain = stroke; in aorta = death)
- thrombosis
- distal embolization (thrombus breaks up and moves to distal areas)
- pressure on joining structures (could occlude joining adjacent blood vessel/nerve)
11
Q
Tx of aneurysms
A
- Sx (prevent cmplx)
