Diazepam
Class
Benzodiazepine, anticonvulsant, sedative
Mechanism of action
Acts on the Limbic system, the thalamus, and the hypothalamus to produce the sedative effects. Increases the seizure threshold; transient analgesia
Indications
Anxiety, seizure activity, combative patient
Contraindications
Allergy, myasthenia gravis
Precautions
First trimester of pregnancy, watch for extravasation
Adverse effects
Hypotension (rare) from rapid administration or from too high a dose. Brady cardia, respiratory arrest
Incompatibilities/drug interactions
Don not mix or dilute with other solutions or drugs in syringe, tubing, or container
Routs of Admin
IM/IV/IO
Onset of action
Onset within minutes, peak effects variable and duration 20-50min
Adult dose
0.1 mg/kg slow IVP (IM if unable to obtain IV)
Pediatric dose
0.1 mg/kg slow IVP
Special considerations
May prolong CNS depression in the neonate
IV doses may cause respiratory difficulties
