Phenothiazine, anti-emetic, anti-histamine
Mechanism of action
Acts on blood vessels, Gi, respiratory system by competing with histamine for HI receptor site; blocks action of histamine; possesses sedative properties, anti-cholinergic, and anti-emetic activity, potentiates the narcotic effect
Indications
Nausea, vomiting, motion sickness, sedation, potentiation of analgesic effects of narcotics
Contraindications
Hypotension in volume deleted pts. Do not use in pots that have anticholinergic syndromes, children , than 3 yrs of age, hypersensitivity to phenothiazines phlebitis, pregnancy
Adverse effects
EPS, drowsiness, hypotension, palpitations
Routs of admin
IV/IO - must be diluted or IM if no IV
Onset of action
Onset 3-5 min peak at 30-60 min duration 4-6hrs
Adult dose
6.25 - 25mg IV/IO
