Haloperidol
Class
Antipsychotic, dopamine antagonist
Mechanism of action
Produces a selective effect on the CNS by competitive blockade of post synaptic dopamine (D2) receptors in the mesolimbic dopaminergic system to produce tranquilizing effects
Indications
Hyperactive behavior, excited delirium
Contraindications
Parkinson’s disease, hypersensitivity
Relative contraindications
CAD, CHF, Hepatic impairment, prolonged QT syndromes, seizures, dementia, tardive dyskinesia
Adverse effects
Hypotension, dystonic reaction, prolonged QT interval, seizures
Incompatabilities/ Drug interactions
All drugs - Flush line before and after administration
Routs of administration
IM preferred, IV/IO monitor EKG for prolonged QT and torsades
Adult dose
2.5 -10 mg IV/IO/IM
Pediatric
not recommended
Special Considerations
Watch for extrapyramidal symptoms and prolongation of QT interval
