Synthetic opioid analgesic, schedule II narcotic
Mechanism of action
Inhibits ascending pain pathways in CNS, increases pain threshold and alters pain perception by binding to opiate receptors
Indications
Pain analgesic
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity
Precautions
Elderly, seizure disorders, myasthenia gravis, alcohol intoxication, previous administration of opioids
Adverse effects
Bradycardia, hypotension, cardiac arrest, respiratory depression, chest tightness (rigidity) and laryngospasm
Adult dose
1 mcg/kg IVP (titrate to effect. may repeat as 1/2 dose every 5 minutes to max of 3 mcg/kg
Pediatric
1 mcg/kg IVP
Special considerations
Continue close monitoring of patients vital signs: BP,HR,RR, and SPO2
