Parasympatholytic, anti-cholinergic
Mechanism of Action
Clocks acetylcholine at parasympathetic neuroeffector sites, increases cardiac output, heart rate by blocking vagal stimulation in the heart; dies secretions by blocking cages nerve
Indications
Symptomatic bradycardia, cholinergic crisis/ organophosphate poisoning
Contraindications
Glaucoma, acute narrow angle glaucoma, second degree AVB type II and complete heart block (third degree AVB)
Adverse Effets
Tachydysrhythmias, ventricular irritability, exacerbation/ initiation of angina
Incompatibilities/ Drug interactions

Routs of Administration
Fast IV/IO
Onset of Action
Onset immediate, Peak 1-2 minutes, duration 2-6 hrs
Adult dose
0.5 mg IV/IO every 3-5 minutes as needed to max of 3mg
Pediatric dose
0.02 mg/kg IV/IO minimum 0.1 mg: max single dose 0.5mg
Special considerations
Pregnancy Category C
Antihistamines, phenothiazines, and tricyclic anti depressants can enhance effect of Atropine
