Anti-emetic
Mechanism of Action
Prevents nausea, vomiting by blocking serotonin peripherally, centrally, and in the small intestine
Indications
Administered in an effort to reduce the nausea or vomiting complication associated with certain existing medical illness, injuries, or medication side effects (first drug of choice)
Contraindications/ Precautions
Known hypersensitivity to the medication; Hepatic disease
Adverse effects
Bronchospasm(rare). chest pain, tachycardia, hypotension, pain at injection site, extrapyramidal symptoms, seizures.
Routs of admint
SL,IM, IN, or IV/IO
Onset of action
Rapid onset peak of 15-30 min and duration of 4-8hrs. Onset of IM is rapid with peak of 40min and duration is unknown
Adult dose
4-8mg, slow IVP, SL,IN,or IM if no IV
Pediatric dose
0.1mg/kg slow IVP, SL IN if no IV
Special considerations
Give undiluted when administering IM or IV/IO
Administer IV/IO slowly over at lease 30 seconds (preferably over 2-5min)
Observe for prolonged QT intervals
