Cardizem Flashcards
Trade Name
Diltiazem
Class
Calcium Channel blocker; Calcium antagonist
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits Calcium ion influx across cell membranes during cardiac depolarization, decreases SA and AV conduction and dilates coronary and peripheral arteries and arterioles thereby slowing the rapid ventricular rate associated with atrial fibrillation and atrial fluter, and reduces coronary and peripheral vascular resistance
Indications
Rapid ventricular response associated with atrial fibrillation / atrial flutter, SVT refractory to Adenosine
Contraindications
Hypotension
Adverse Effects
Hypotension, bradycardia, heart block, chest pain, systole, nausea and vomiting
Incompatabilites/ Drug interactions
Poison induced or drug induces tachycardias
Routes of admin
Slow IV IO bolus over 3-5 minutes followed by maintenance infusion drip
Onset of action
onset is immediate, peak
Adult dose
20mg IV over 2-3 minutes. may repeat 25mg in 15 minutes
Pediatric dose
N/A
Special Considerations
Monitor BP and HR Closely
Protocols used
A-12 PSVT
