Non-depolarizing neuromuscular blockade
Mechanism of action
Inhibits transmission of nerve impulses by binding with cholinergic receptor sites, antagonizing action of acetylcholine
Indications
Facilitation of endotracheal intubation and skeletal muscle relaxation during mechanical ventilation
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, theophylline increases risk of dysrhythmia
Adverse effects
Prolonged apnea, bronchospasm, vomiting
Routes of admin
IV/IO
Onset of action
IV infusion onset in seconds, peak effect 1-2 minutes and durations 20-30min
Adult dose
1mg/kg IV/IO
Pediatric dose
> 3months, 1mg/kg IV/IO
Special considerations
Electrolyte imbalances increase action
Always sedate when administering this medication
