Urinary System Flashcards
What is the order of the urinary system?
Kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra
What does the kidney do?
Filters out blood and removing waste. The waste is considered urine and is passed onto the ureter.
What do the ureter do?
There are two of them. One connected to each kidney and leads to the bladder. They are muscular tubes that carry out the urine from the kidney and to the bladder.
What does the bladder do?
Holds blood. 300-500 ml of urine at a time. The main function is to hold bladder until it is full.
What does the urethra do?
The brain sends a signal to the bladder that releases the urine into the urethra. Transports urine out of the body.
What are the units of the kidney?
Nephrons
What are the three layers of the kidney?
Renal cortex, medulla, pelvis
What is the order of fluids going through a nephron?
glomerulus, proximal convoluted tubule, bowman’s capsule, descending limb, loop of Henle, ascending limb, distal convoluted tubule, collecting tubule
What is blood filtered by?
The Bowman’s capsule
What is the glomerulus?
A large mess of veins into a ball-looking shape
What does the proximal tubule do?
Takes out salt, water, and glucose.
What happens when filtrate goes down the loop?
It is extremely salty, so water is diffused out and reclaimed by capillaries.
What happens when the filtrate goes back up the loop?
Not permeable to water. Permeable to salt. Lose salt.
What is ADH?
Antidiuretic Hormone. A chemical that the brain produces that makes the kidneys produce less water making less urine. This regulates water in the body.
