Evolution Flashcards
What is speciation?
when a species is separated into two differing environments, the adaptations that are selected for become so different that two new species are made.
What is morphological?
members of a species that look alike
What is biological?
Groups of organisms that can produce fertile offspring.
What can speciation lead to?
change in courtship behavior, sex organs, mating time, sperm and egg.
What is Darwin’s theory of evolution?
Species can change over time. New species come from pre-existing species. All species share a common ancestor
What is Lamarck’s theory of evolution?
Use and disuse theory: the more a thing/trait was used, the more it developed
The more something would used, the higher chance it would be inherited
What is Weissman’s theory of evolution?
Disproved Lamarck. Germ plasm is the essential element of germ cells (eggs and sperm). Hereditary material is passed from generation to generation.
What is overproduction?
The majority of species produce more offspring in each generation than needed to maintain population.
What is competition
Due to limited resources, animals must compete for food and space.
What is variation
Difference in traits such as size, color, shape, etc. that affect an individual’s ability to compete.
What is adaptation?
Species who are able to change with environmental changes survive, while those unable to adapt or change will die out.
What is natural selection?
Nature selects which organisms with favorable, adapted variations will survive. The environment determines favorability.
What is speciation?
The accumulation of a large amount of favorable variations creates a new species that are unable to reproduce with the original species
What is divergent evolution?
Evolve from the same point into two different things/traits/organisms
What is convergent evolution?
Evolve from different points into the same or similar traits
