What is the order of where food goes during digestion?
mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum
What does the mouth do?
Initial mechanical digestion of food.
What does the esophagus do?
Long muscular tube connecting the pharynx and the stomach. It moves the food through peristalsis.
What does the stomach do?
Carries breakdown of food through mechanical digestion, churning, and chemical digestion.
What does the small intestine do?
Major chemical digestion through enzymes. Contains villi to absorb nutrients.
What does the large intestine do?
Absorbs water and vitamin K.
What does the rectum do?
Where the stool exits the body.
What does the liver do?
Produces bile which turns fat into energy.
What is bile?
Emulsifies (mixes) lipids for easier digestion
