Female Reproduce System Flashcards
What does estrogen do? Where does it come from?
Excreted from ovaries. A steroid hormone (like testosterone)
What is oogenesis?
The formation of female gametes
What is the corona radiata?
The outermost layer of an ovum (egg). Has follicle cells which assist in nourishing the egg cells.
What is the zona pellucida?
Second layer of the ovum. Thick coat of glycoprotein that prevents other species from fertilizing the egg. Prevents more than one sperm cell from fertilizing the egg.
What are the stages of the egg?
Zygote, two cell, four cell, morula, blastula, gastrula
What are the three layers of the grastula?
Ectoderm, endoderm, mesoderm. (In, mid, out)
What liquid does the blastula have?
Blastocoel
What day is the egg usually released?
14
What is FSH?
Follicle stimulating hormone. Assist with the follicular growth and maturity of ovum.
What is LH?
Luteinizing hormone. Assist with the production of the corpus luteum
What is the corpus luteum?
Secretes progesterone. Makes the uterus healthy for a developing fetus.
What is progesterone?
Thickens the uterine lining. Prepare the body for pregnancy.
What is gestation?
Pregnancy
What is organogenesis?
The formation of organs
What’s is IV fertilization?
In vitro fertilization. Eggs are put in a lab to be fertilized by sperm cells. This helps people with infertility. However, there can be more than one fetus.
Where do eggs usually get fertilized?
The Fallopian tube
What does the placenta do?
Transfers nutrients and oxygen from the mother’s blood into the blood of the fetus. Through diffusion.
When do follicles mature?
Puberty
What are the three stages of ovulation?
Follicular stage, ovulation, luteal
What happens in the follicular stage?
LH and FSH stimulate follicles to grow. Follicles will produce estrogen. This causes menstruation to happen.
What happens in the ovulation stage?
LH and FSH stimulate maturation of a follicle. The endometrium thickens.
What happens in the luteal phase?
LH stimulates the formation of a corpus luteum from follicular tissue after ovulation occurs. The corpus luteum secretes estrogen and progesterone.
