Simply put, pharmaceutical biotechnology is the incorporation of biotechnology into development of modern medicines. A majority of therapeutic drugs in the medical field are made from biotechnology. This could be antibodies, nucleic acid products, and vaccines.

These bioformulations, creations of biotechnology have to go through many stages. This includes understanding the fundamental molecular mechanisms of viruses, synthesis of vaccines, and widespread testing.

Pharmaceutical biotechnology can be split into two branches: gene cloning and recombinant DNA. Gene cloning comprises of isolating a DNA-molecule segment and synthesizing it. Recombinant DNA consists of gene splicing.

Pharmaceutical biotechnology helps scientists make many life changing discoveries in the medical field. Any bioformulation with pharmaceutical value can have a patent for up to 20 years to prevent exploitation of discoveries.
