A condition that occurs in a child whose mother consumed alcohol during pregnancy.

Why is a fetus more affected by alcohol than adults?
A fetus takes more time to metabolize alcohol. the baby remains intoxicated for much longer.
How can alcohol affect a growing fetus?
Cause the harm in developing organs and tissues. Cause permanent brain damage.
What are symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome?
Small head, heart defects, bone problems, kidney problems, small eyes, short and upturned nose, thin upper lip, low birth weight, hearing problems, joint deformity, etc.
What are some behavoral affects of fetus alcohol syndrome?
poor memory, poor balance, delayed mental development, mood swings, learning difficulties, problems staying on task, poor social skills, getting along with people, lack of focus, etc.
What does HIV stand for?
Human immunodeficiency virus
What does AIDS stand for?
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
What do T cells do?
They release chemicals that destroy the infected cells. They activate the production of antibodies that will attach to bacteria so they can be targeted for destruction
What are opportunistic infections?
Infections that take advantage of the weak immune system
What are some examples of opportunistic infections?
Pneumonia, tuberculosis, encephalitis, chronic diarrhea, meningitis, etc.
How is HIV and AIDS spread?
Through blood contact.
