Respiration System Flashcards
What happens during inhalation?
Inhalation is an active process. The lungs and ribcage expand. The diaphragm contracts downward and draws air in.
What happens during exhalation?
Exhalation is a passive process. Ribs contract and lung compress. The diaphragm releases air upward.
The more CO2 in the blood the more ____ it is.
Acidic
The less CO2 in the blood the more ____ it is.
Basic
Where does gas exchange occur?
Between alveoli and capillaries.
What does gas exchange use?
Diffusion
What happens in respiratory gas exchange?
CO2 diffuses out from blood. O2 is diffusing into the deoxygenated blood.
Where does respiration start?
Nose (nasal cavity) or mouth (oral cavity)
Where do oval/naval cavity connect to the rest of the system?
Pharynx
What are the two pipes of the pharynx?
One for food; one for air. The one in the back is the esophagus. The one in the front is air pipe (larynx).
What is the larynx
The voice box
Where does the air go after the larynx?
trachea (just a pipe for air)
What do the trachea split into?
Bronchi
What do the bronchi split into?
Smaller and smaller tubes. Become thinner. They not longer have cartilage or are rigid. They are called bronchioles.
What is end of every bronchiole?
Alveoli
