Urinalysis Flashcards
Why don’t horses have clear urine
Normally cloudy due to mucoprotein produced by renal epithelial cells
Unreliable dip stick values
-Urobilinogen
-Nitrate
-Leukocyte esterase
-USG
Urine pH
Carnivores 6-7.5
Herbivores 7.5-8.5
Not an accurate indicator of acid/base balance
Alkalinization of urine
Urease producing bacteria and can often see crystal formation
Urine protein measurement
Best for albumin and somewhat hemoglobin and myoglobulin. Must interpret with USG
False positives for urine protein
-Very alkaline urine
-Cleaning agents
Urine glucose measurement
There should be no glucose in urine due to renal reabsorption
False positive glucose readings
Cleaning agents
False negatives for glucose readings
-Vit C
-Ketonuria
-Cold urine (must warm to room temp before analysis)
Causes of glucosuria
Most common in hyperglycemia:
-DM
-Severe pancreatitis
-Hyperadrenocorticism
-Stress
-Iatrogenic
Normoglycemic glucosuria
-Previous transient episode of hyperglycemia
-Renal tubular defect
Ketonuria
Indicates systemic problem not a renal problem. Produced when negative energy balance. Starvation or lack of insulin
Ketone measurement
Measures acetone and acetoacetate
False ketone positives
Pigmented urine
Heme measurement
Very sensitive. Positive for hematuria, hemoglobinuria, and myoglobinuria
