Glucose Flashcards
Insulin
Lowers blood glucose by promoting uptake, utilization and storage
Occurs in myocytes, adipocytes and hepatocytes
Not needed for transport into neurons, WBC, RBC, and platelets
Glucagon
Increases BG
Gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis
Cortisol
Increase BG
Gluconeogenesis
Creates insulin resistance
Epinephrine
Depends on type of stimulus but primarily inhibit insulin secretion and cause insulin resistance to increase BG
Growth hormone
Increase BG
Decrease glucose uptake by myocytes and hepatocytes
Ways to increase BG
-Intestine-> dietary intake
-Liver-> gluconeogenesis, glycogenolysis
Ways to decrease BG
-Insulin
-Liver-> Decreased gluconeogenesis and increased glycogen synthesis
-Increase fat storage
-Increased urinary loss
