Non regenerative anemia Flashcards
What to consider if you have nonregenerative anemia
Look and see if there are other cell lines affected. Is there a pancytopenia
Categories of non-regenerative anemia
- Decreased erythropoiesis either bone marrow disease or extramedullary disease
- Defective erythropoiesis
Erythropoietic failure bone marrow disease characteristics
-Non regenerative anemia
-Normocyticc, normochromic, homogeneous
-No reticulocytes
Aplastic anemia
Destruction of multipotential stem cells and get a decrease in al hematopoietic cells (neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia)
Causes of aplastic anemia
-Estrogen toxicity
-Drugs
-Ingestion of bracken fern in cattles
-Infectious agents
-Idiopathic
Pure red cell aplasia
Marked decreased to absent concentration of Red cell precursors but other cell lines are fine
Pure red cell aplasia causes
Dogs-> immune mediated
Cats-> FeLV
Myelophthisis
Marrow replaced by an abnormal proliferation of non hematopoietic cells often neoplastic cells
Myelofibrosis
Abnormal proliferation of stromal cells within marrow, replacing hematopoietic tissue
Anemia of inflammatory disease (chronic disease)
Usually mild anemia and have disease that causes systemic effects. Inflammation blunts the regenerative response to blood loss or hemolytic anemia
Pathogenesis of anemia of inflammatory disease
Decreased EPO and response of erythroid precursors
Decreased availability of iron (macrophages sequester iron, iron uptake in enterocytes decreased, and decreased hemoglobin)
Anemia of chronic renal failure
Los of normal renal tissue reduces EPO synthesis also see decreased lifespan of red cells as uremic acids increase
Causes of failure of erythropoiesis
Aplastic anemia
Pure red cell aplasia
Immune mediated ineffective erythropoiesis
Infectious agents
Space occupying lesion
