Unit 5: The Central Dogma - The Cell Cycle Flashcards
G0
This is a resting phase that some cells enter when the conditions for cell division are not favorable.
G1
This is the first growth phase. The cell increases in size and synthesizes new organelles, e.g. mitochondria.
S
This is known as the synthesis phase. The cell’s DNA is replicated, so there are two copies of it, ready for cell division.
G2
This is the second growth phase. The cell continues to grow and produce proteins needed for cell division.
M phase (mitosis)
The two copies of DNA are separated and the cell then splits into two by dividing the cytoplasm.
Which phase is not necessary in all cells?
G0
What are the 3 phases of interphase?
G1, S, and G2.
What are the phases of mitosis?
PMAT (prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase)
Interphase
DNA synthesis, cell growth (everyday functions of the cell)
Prophase
-Chromatin winds into chromosomes
-Nucleus dissolves
-Centrioles move to opposite poles
-Spindles attach to centromere
