EOC REVIEW: BOL- Basics of Chemistry Flashcards
What is a proton?
It is positively charged; equal to one Atomic Mass Unit (AMU)
What is a neutron?
Not charged; equals slightly more than one AMU
What is an electron?
Negatively charged, essentially no mass
What is atomic mass?
Protons + Neutrons
What is atomic number?
Protons
What is an ion?
An ion is an atom or group of atoms that has gained or lost one or more electrons, giving it a positive or negative charge.
How many electrons fit into each ring?
The first shell holds 2, second holds 8, all the rest hold 8
What is the difference between covalent and ionic bonds?
In covalent bonds, atoms share electrons, and in ionic bonds, atoms transfer electrons.
What does polar mean?
Oppositely charged
What does nonpolar mean?
Equally charged
