Unit 3B: Basics of Life - Kingdoms & Domains Flashcards
What are the three domains of life?
Archaea, bacteria, and eukaryota.
What are the six kingdoms of life?
Bacteria, archaea, protista, plantae, fungi, and animalia.
Are archaea pathogenetic?
No, archaea do not spread diseases.
What was the first organism to live on earth (possibly)?
Prokaryotes
What does bacteria NOT have?
A nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.
Do bacteria need oxygen?
Some bacteria are aerobic (need oxygen) and some are anerobic (don’t need oxygen).
Do bacteria perform photosynthesis?
Some bacteria are photosynthetic.
Do bacteria need a cell wall?
YES! Bacteria MUST CONTAIN a cell wall!!!
What is a gram-positive bacteria?
It means that the cell wall is thick.
How do bacteria reproduce?
They reproduce asexually through binary fission.
What is a flagellum?
A flagellum is a tail like structure that whips around for viruses and bacteria to swim
What is a pilus?
A pilus are shorter hair like structures that are used to attached to surfaces.
What type of DNA do protists have?
Linear
How do protists obtain their nutrition?
Protists are mixotrophs.
Where do protists live?
Aquatic habitats and within other organisms
