EOC REVIEW: BOL- The Immune System Flashcards
What are pathogens?
Pathogens are any organism that causes disease.
What is active immunity?
It develops when the body is exposed to a pathogen and produces antibodies (e.g., through infection or vaccination).
What is passive immunity?
It occurs when antibodies are transferred from one person to another (e.g, breastfeeding).
What is innate immunity?
The body’s first line of defense, including physical barriers and immune cells that respond quickly.
What is adaptive immunity?
It develops over time as the body learns to recognize and remember specific pathogens.
What is the defense system with which you were born?
Innate Immunity
What is the immunity which you aquire?
Adaptive immunity
What is HIV?
Human Immunodeficiency Virus; it attacks the immune system.
What can untreated HIV lead to?
AIDS (aquired immunodeficiency syndrome), which is where the body’s immune system has been compromised so much it is basically nonexistent and becomes vulnerable to infections and diseases (RIP Freddy :’( ).
