EOC REVIEW: BIODIVERSITY- Speciation Flashcards
What is speciation?
It is the process where one species splits into two or more species.
What are prezygotic barriers?
Prezygotic barriers prevent members of a different species from mating to produce a hybrid zygote.
What are postzygotic barriers?
Postzygotic barriers keep hybrid zygotes form developing into healthy, fertile adults (they can’t reproduce).
What is geographic isolation?
Allopatric speciation divides a population into geographically isolated subpopulations
What is allopatric speciation?
The same thing as geographic isolation
What is temporal isolation?
Breeding season doesn’t match between males and females.
What is behavioral isolation?
Based on the behavior of species in the context of mating rituals and species.
What are the types of reproductive isolation?
Prezygotic and postzygotic barriers; temporal isolation; behavioral isolation; and geographic isolation
