types long term memory Flashcards
what is declarative memory
Declarative memory is split into two parts episodic memory is memory about events and it usually time stamped it is personal and have emotion attached the emotion significance whilst encoding impacts the strength of the memory sometimes rarely forgotten
what is semantic memory
Semantic knowledge is knowledge of the world and about information it isn’t time stamped and we are constantly adding to our memories by new things we learn eveyday it isn’t time stamped of personal
what is procedural memory
Procedural memory is memory of how to do action or skill it isn’t time stsmped and takes no conscious effort to recall how to do the action thus its an automate
one strength of long term memory
One strength is that there is real life case study to support the ltm isn’t a unitary store but different parts of the ltmare responsible for the different types of memory, clive wearing had an infecton which cause complications to his brain it caused hm to lose his semantic merry as he could never remember he was married or that he children however his procedural memory was still intact as e was able to play the piano this is a strength as if the ltm wasn’t a separate store we would’ve expected clive to lose all his ltm completely howver as he maintained his procedural memory and lost his declarative memory that must mean the ltm isn’t a unitary but rather contain different storages which hold different types of long term memories thus increasing the validity of the working memory mdel
one strength of longterm memory
Another strengthti s that there is pet scans to show that the ltm cotains different store for different types of long term memory Tulving found neuro imaging evidence when people retrieved different long term memories when people retrieved semantic memories the posterior reigion was highlighted and when people were remembering events the episodic memory the prefrontal cortex was highlighted this is a strength as the ltm isn’t a unitary store as different parts of the brain are responsible when retrieving information from different tpes of long term memory thus increasing the validity of the working memory model
one weakness of the long term memory
One weakness is that it is impossible to tell whether the episodic memory and the semantic memory is separate. When an event happens it is stored as a semantic memory however the knowledge about the event has led to knowledge about facts of the even which is added to our semantic memory thus it questions whether episodic memory is a gateway to semantic memory thus if this is the case then it refutes the idea in the working memory model where the semantic and episodic memory exist as different stores as we cannot be sure it decrease the validity of the working memory model
