Minirity Influence Flashcards
What is minority’s influence
Refers to processwhere a small group of people change the view or opinions of other people to match the minority usually results in internalisation in the long term
When is minority influence likely to happen
When minority has been flexible committed and consistent
What is consistency
On first exposure to a minority position the majority may assume the minority are wrong if minority continues to maintain their position betweeen members of the minority the majority reasses the situation
What is commitment
Minority needs to show they are willing to give up their time and work hard to support their cause
What is flexibility
Being consistent can make the minority group look right and unwilling to compromise can be off putting for the majority instead members of the minority should be prepared to adapt their position and consider counter argument and have a balance between consistency and flexibility
What was moscovi procedure
Group of females shown coloured slide on a wall two confederates there were three conditions consistent confederates answered incorrectly
Inconsistent confederates answered correctly and incorrectly
Control no confederates answered incorrectly
What were results of moscovi
Participants confirmed to minority in 8.5% of trial when consistent
Participants confirmed to 1.25% when inconsistent
What was conclusion from moscovi
When participants are consistent it leads to an increase in conformity
Supporting research for consistency
Wood et al did a meta analysis of 100 similar students and found that the minorities who were most consistent were most influential as it was a metaabalysis it shows that the same results were seen across studies thus concluding that when when the minority are consistent it is a major factor when influencing majority
Supporting research for flexibility
Beneath created groups of three participants and one confederate who had decided how much to pay a victim of a ski accident when a consistent confederate argues for a low amount he had no effect on the majority however when he compromised and was a bit flexible the majority changed their opinion to a lower amount this shows how flexibility is key to helping influence a majority
Artificial tasks
Judging colours of slide is not an everyday task for two reasons conformity and influence happens people know other people further more real situations have more pressure and significance attached eg jury service this the results cannot be used to explain the influence in real life
