Q

What is the strength of Schaffer and Emerson study

A

It is longitudinal in design the infant were regularly assessed in seperatikn and anxiety setting they were assessed several months to determine stages of attachment this is a strength as it allowed an in-depth research which decreased individual differences as the infant was compared to themselves in prior months so there could be a difference in stages as oppose to difference in other infants a ghis increases the validity

Q

It is an incomplete explanation of attachment

A

The attachment only focused on individualist cultures based in Glasgow this Schaffer’s nd Emerson found that multiple attachment form eleven month onwards this is a weakness as in collectivist cultures the infants are exposed to many multiple caregivers as they usually share children responsibilities as a result the likelihood of developing multiple attachments before the age of 11 months is very high however as shatter and Emerson. Study hasn’t accounted for the difference in enviroment so it is incomplete

Q

One weakness is that it is hard to tell the social interaction between infant and caregiver so it’s impossible to tell whether attachment is being formed

A

This is a weakness as babies have little motors control and make expression and noises so it is difficult to determine whether a baby is attempting to make onteraction or its a random movement if all the evidence is based on the babies behaviour not all the evidence can be relied on so decreasing the validity
