A

Loftus and palmer et al decided to do a research to determine how leading questions affected accuracy of recalling an event. There were independent group design the students where split up into groups and each shown seven of the same clips of different car accidents they were then asked a series of questions about the accident with one critical questions how fast were the cars going when they ……. Each other there were different verbs of different intensities and impactfulness.

Q

what were the findings

A

The findings were when presented with a question with gentle verb collision the speed reported was 33.8 and when presented with the verb smash the speed reported was 40.8 mph this shows how the leading question distort the way people view an event

Q

what is the research for post event discussion

A

Loftus wanted to investigate how post event discussion distorts the accuracy of the eye witness testimony. The participants wre split into pairs and both watched a video of a robbery from different view points they then sat in the same room after the video was over in the control group the pairs had to sit in silence wheras the experimental group where allowed to talk and discuss what they had watched following this the participants where aske dquestions about the video they had watched

Q

what are the finding and conclusions

A

watched in the control group there was 0% of inaccurate information whereas in the experimental group 71% of inaccurate testimonies this shows how the post event discussin led to an increase in accurate recall as the information had been picked up in he discussion and was stated either to be right or to be liked

Q

what is the strength of misleading information

A

One strength of the research into misleading information affecting eye witness testimony is that it is artificial in a lab environment with high control over variable this had decreased the effects of extraneous variables which may affect the dependent variable thus increasing the validity of the cause and effect relationship futher mor loftus used standerdised procedure so the experiment can be repeated an can be checked to see if findings are reliable thus increasing validity of conclusion made

Q

what is the strength of misleading infirmation

A

One strength of knowledge One strength of knowledge of misleading information affecting ewt is that there is real life applications, leading questions can be seen to distort the accuracy of the events observed thus police have come up with standardised procedure to ensure questions asked to witness are not leading in any way so that the accuracy of the ewt Is not affected further more the police have developed strategies to ensure that witness are quickly interviewed and give their account of what the viewed before speaking to other witnessed so that their account isn’t influenced by other witness testimonies thus these practical application have enhanced the accuracies of eye witness testimonies

Q

what is the weakness of misleading information

A

One weakness is that there is refuting evidence from yuliie she interviewed witness that had observed a bank robbery and asked them question 5 months after the robbery they were asked leading questions and their responses were compared to the original police testimony the gave she found that the participants testimony was identical or very similar to the ones they gave to the police 5 months ago this refute the idea that leading question distort the accuracy of eye witness testimonies as these witness of the robbery were still accurate in their responses despite the use of leading questions thus decreasing validity
