Maternal Deprivation Flashcards
What was procedure of 44 thieves
Through child guidance clinic Bowlby analysed case history of children diagnosed as maladjusted and found that 44 had been caught stealing of these 44, 14 had no remorse and were known as affection less theives
What were the findings of 44 thieves
80% of affectionless thieves experienced desperation from primary care giver of those 30 who were remorseful only 5 experiences seperation
What is the conclusion of the study of 44 thieves
Losing mother maternal deprivation can have emotional impacts and may lead to a lot fe of crime or inability to empathise
What is maternal deprivation
A seperation between a child and their mother which districts attactcment during the critical period this may lead to irriversible emotional and intellectual development
What are benefits of maternal deprivation
It benefits the infant later in life as they go on to forming better and stronger relationships in the future
Lack of internal working model
As they are missing their mum they are lacking a primary caregiver this forms a weak template or fail to create a template of what to expect in future relationship so affects emotional and social development to form healthy relationship
Afectionless psycopathy
Lack of care and as a result of being in a care home it may lead to afectionless psychopath inability to feel emotion
Mental retardation
Children deprived of primary caregiver during critical period will suffer from mental retardation with IQ in children who had remained in care lower than those who were fostered
What did bowlby suggest about the effects of maternal deprivation ( brief)
Can have serious emotional and intellectual development
Strength that there is emotional consequence of suffering maternal deprivation
Bifulco et al conducted a study on women and found that 25% on these women in care had with severe depression in the future compared to 15% of those who didn’t experience seperation. It also found mental health issue to be severe when loss occurred before the age of 6
This shows that maternal deprivation has emotional consequences and have left these women in a more vulnerable state for developing mental health conditions increasing validity of maternal hypothesis theory
There is refuting evidence by experimental study on a larger scal
The 44 theives experiment was done with 500 people in this case maternal deprivation did not cause intellectual deprivation or lead to a life of crime
Consequently the results and findings of the study is not consistently seen so there may be other factors that affect
