Q

outline the short term memory model

A

here information is encoded acoustically thus is words and information are acoustically similar they may become muddled and memory may become confused, the duration is very small only 18-30 seconds within these seconds Jacob believes that we can hold 5-9 chunks of information and that information can be remembered if we split it into chunks, in order for memory to be stored in the stm it must be maintain rehearsal in order to maintain the memory in the short term

Q

outline the sensory register

A

The sensory register codes information uses 5 senses as there is a whole wide range of senses and things to pay attention to it has a very large capacity however it only has a duration of less than 0.2 seconds in order for memory to be passed on to the stm it must be paid attention to otherwise it will pass, the memory is then paid attention to and transferred to the stm

Q

outlone the long term memory

A

In order for the memory to pass into the long term we must pay elaborate rehearse the information and fully understand the concepts then memory can be stored in the ltm in the ltm memory is stored semantically it has unlimited capacity and unlimited lifetime duration forgetting usually occurs due to interference. The multistore model states that the multi store memory can only function this way in a set linear pattern and if memory wants to be passed into the ltm it must go through each process in a linear order.

Q

what is a strength of multistore model

A

There is strength real life evidence to support the stm and the tm are unitary separate store the patient kf had a biking accident where his stm was affected but his LTM was intact this is a strength as if memory wasn’t separate stores we would’ve expected him to forget all his memory as a whole howver as he was able to maintin his long term memory it shows that the separate stores for each type of memory and they exist at different parts of the brain thus why one was affected and not the other this increases validity of the multi store model for explaining memory.

Q

what is a strength of multi store model

A

Another strength is the primacy and the recency experiment partcipants were given a list of words to remember they were then asked to free recall the particaipants could often remember the first few words and the last few lords and the middle wrds were usually forgotten, those that were at the start has been rehearsed and were stored in the ltm primacy effect and those that werein the last few words were store in the stm recency effect, this shows that he stm and ltm are different distict storage components which led to some words being transferred to the stm and some words being transferred to the ltm this increase the validity as it provides support for the stm and ltm being separate stores thus increasing validity of the multi store model

Q

what is a weakness ltm

A

A weakness is that some memories don’t need to be rehearsed Kulick investigated that in order to be stored in the ltm for example flash bulb memories these are memories of emotional significance and often lead to conscious effort to recall as they are so significant in emotion the intensity of emotion determines the strength of the memory this is a weakness as the multistore model stats that I n order for any memory to be passed on the LTM it must be rehearsed however as the STM hasn’t rehearsed any information and memory is already in the ltm it refute the theory proposed by the multi store model decreasing the validity of the model
