Q

what is forgetting

A

Forgetting is when memory cannot be retrieved from the long term memory interference theory is in the basis that information compete for storage causing one set of information to be overwritten and destroyed there are two types

Q

what are the two types of interference

A

Proactive is when old information makes it hard to remember new information. Retroactive is when new information competes with storage with old information causing old info to be overwritten and destroyed

Q

what is postman research

A

Postman research he gave two groups of participants a list of paired words in the control group they only receive one list of words wheras the experimental grouo obtained two list of paired words their memory was then tested free recall the ability to remember more words in the first list was better in the control group as in the experimental group interference occurs as new set set of word competed for storage with the old set of words causing a old set of word to be overwritten and destroyed thus decresing the ability of remembering due to retroactive interferance

Q

there is strength to support

A

There is research to support that semantically similar words cause greater interference groups were given two list of words nonsense syllable related to the first list of words their recall was tested and percentage was recorder the experiment was then repeated but using semantically similiair words to the first list of words the percaentage of accurate recall of the list of words this time was less then the nonsense syllables list this is a strength as it shows that those word in the list that were semantically similar it was hard to remember them thus led to poorer recall as the words caused interfernace and caused some words to be overwritten and destroyed

Q

there is strength to support

A

There is strength to support interfernace theory as it has led to pracrtical application Danaher did a study and found that companies had produced strategies in order to prevent interference as when customers where exposed to adverts over a few days the interference were greater when exposed to two competing brands within a week so rather than showing the advert over a few days they were suggested to show adverts multiple times a day this allows the companies to remain in the attention of the customers this is a strength as having knowledge of interference theory has led to practical application which can increase the success of such business

Q

there is weakness

A

There is weakness to suggest that memory isn’t permanently over written. Some male participants were asked to remember a list of words they were then asked to free recall but were unable to do so another 24 hours later they were asked this time to recall but thorough recognition task the males were able to recognize the lost of the words and showed evidence of spontaneous recovery this is a weakness as it shows that memory isn’t overwritten but rather just temporarily inaccessible also the way of testing recall has an ability in quality of recall thus decreasing the interference theory
