- Broad tendinous insertion of abductor muscle is under considerable strain
- Subject to tendonitis
- Subject to degeneration leading to tendon tears
- Trochanteric bursa can also become inflamed
- Similiar to rotator cuff problems of the shoulder

- Pain and tenderness in the region of the greater trochanter
- Pain on resisted abduction
