Spinal Stenosis and Claudication Flashcards
1
Q
Pathogenesis of spinal stenosis?
A
Spondylosis & bulging discs | Bulging ligamentum flavum | Osteophytosis
2
Q
What is claudication?
A
Pain in legs while walking
3
Q
Normal age demographic for spinal stenosis/claudication?
A
Over 60
4
Q
Signs/symptoms of spinal stenosis?
A
-Claudication
5
Q
How is vascular claudication different from spinal stenosis claudication?
A
- Claudication distance is inconsistent
- Pain is burning
- Pain is less walking uphill (spine flexion creates more space for cauda equina)
- Pedal pulses preserved
6
Q
Treatment of spinal stenosis?
A
- Conservative: physiotherapy and weight loss
- If no improvement & MRI evidence of stenosis: surgery
7
Q
What surgery for spinal stenosis?
A
Decompression to increase space for cauda equina
