a non-inflammatory arthritis

pathogenesis
-Imbalance between wear and repair of cartilage within joints
-Considerable amount of associated inflammation
what causes OA?
-Commonly no definitive causative factor = primary OA
- genetic
- familial link
- joints with abnormal alignment
what causes secondary OA?
-Congenital hip dislocation
- Perthes
- SUFE
- Previous intra-articular fracture
- Extra-articular fracture with malunion
- Osteochondral/hyaline cartilage injury
- Crystal arthropathy
- Inflammatory arthritis
- Meniscal arthritis
- Genu varum or valgum
How does osteoarthritis present?
pain
how is OA investigated?
X-ray
-Loss of joint space
- Osteophytes
- Sclerosis
- Subchondral cysts
how is OA managed?
weight loss and exercise
some situations - surgery
