Signs and symptoms of DIP OA?
- Painful
- Swollen
- Tender
- Eventually affecting all fingers
- Stiffness & bony thickening
- Dorsal ganglion cyst (mucous cyst may be present)
What is a term for stiffness and bony thickening in DIP OA?
Heberden’s nodes
TreatmeNt of DIP OA?
Mild/moderate= removal of osteophytes & excision of mucous cyst
-Severe: arthrodesis

- Painful
- Swollen
- Tender
- Eventually affecting all fingers
- Stiffness and bony thickening
What is the term for stiffness and bony thickening in PIP OA?
Bouchard’s nodes
Treatment of PIP OA in index finger?
Arthrodesis to preserve pinch grip
Treatmnet of PIP OA in other fingers?
Replacement arthroplasty may be required
Aetiology of MCP OA?
Rare
Usually a specific cause such as injury, gout, infection
Signs and symptoms of MCP OA?
- Painful
- Swollen
- Tender
Treatmnet of MCP OA?
Surgical treatment possible: joint replacements
- Relieve pain
- Improve ROM
Complications of treatment for MCP OA?
- Ulnar drift
- Extensor tendon subluxation
1st carpo-metacarpal joint OA (trapxiometacarpal joint)
- Especially occurs in women
- Treat with
- Injection of steroid
- Excision arthroplasty
- Fusion
