Forearm Fractures Flashcards
How are the radius and ulna connected?
Proximally and distally by strong ligaments
If the radius or ulna is fractured?
There is most likely fracture/dislocation involving the other bone
Cause of an ulnar shaft fracture?
Direct blow
- Many cases occurred after being hit by a truncheon
- Monteggig injury likely to be associated with it
Treatment of ulnar shaft fracture?
Conservative
ORIF
Treatment for fracturing both bones of the forearm?
- Diaphyseal fracture of both bones = ORIF
- Substantially angulated fracture:/displaced fracture with intact periosteum: ,UA and plaster
Treatment of a child with a minimally angulated fracture?
Plaster only
What is a monteggia fracture dislocation?
Fracture of ulna with dislocation of radial head at elbow
Investigation for a monteggia fracture dislocation?
- X-rays may not easily demonstrate the incongruence of radiocapitaller joint
- In isolated ulna fracture: perform elbow X-rays
Treatment for monteggia fracture dislocation?
ORIF
What is a Galeazzi fracture dislocation?
Fracture of radius with dislocation of the ulna at the distal radioulnar joint
Investigation for a galeazzi fracture dislocation?
Forearm x-rays may not clearly demonstrate dislocation
Isolated radial shaft fracture: lateral x-ray of wrist is mandatory
What is mandatory in an isolated radial shaft fracture?
Lateral xray of wrist
Treatmnet for gallaezzi fracture dislocation?
ORIF
