What is Paget’s disease?
A
Chronic disorder which results in thickened, brittle and mis-shapen bones

Aetiology of paget’s disease?
A
- Viral infection
- Genetic defects

Symptoms of paget’s disease?
A
- Can be asymptomatic
- Arthritis
- Pathologic fractures
- Deformity
- Pain
- High output cardiac failure

Investigations for Paget’s disease?
A
- Serum alkaline phosphatase is raised
- Calcium & phosphorous normal
- Radiograph shows the affected bone is enlarged, thickened cortices, coarse, and thickened trabeculae and mixed areas of lysis and sclerosis

What would a radiograph show in Paget’s disease?
A
- Affected bone enlarged
- Thickened cortices
- Coarse, thickened trabeculae
- Mixed areas of lysis and sclerosis

What do bone scans show for Paget’s disease?
A
Marked increase uptake in affected bones

Treatment for Paget’s disease?
A
- Biphosphonates- inhibits osteoclasts
- Calcitonin
- Joint replacement may be necessary
- Pathological femoral fractures
