Trauma Overview Flashcards
What is arterial air embolism?
Air bubbles in the arterial blood vessels
What is blunt trauma?
An impact on the body by objects that cause injury without penetrating soft tissues or internal organs and cavities
What is cavitation?
A phenomenon in which speed causes a bullet to generate pressure waves, which cause damage distant from the bullets path
What is coup - contrecoup brain injury?
A brain injury that occurs when force is applied to the head and energy transmission through brain tissue caused injury on the opposite side of original impact.
What is deceleration?
The slowing of an object
What is drag?
Resistance that slows a projectile such as air
What is glasgow coma scale score?
An evaluation tool used to determine level of consciousness which evaluates and assigns point values (scores) response which are then totaled effective in helping predict patients outcomes.
What is an idex of suspicion?
Awareness that unseen life threatening injuries may exist when determining the mechanism of injury
What is Kinetic energy?
The energy of a moving object
What is mechanism of injury?
The forces or energy transmission applied to the body that cause injury.
What is medical emergencies?
Emergencies that requires EMS attention because of illness or conditions not caused by an outside force.
What is multisystem trauma?
Trauma that affects more than one body system?
What is penetrating trauma?
Injury caused by object such as knives and bullets that pierce the surface fo the body and damage internal tissues and organs.
What is potential energy?
The product of mass, gravity, and height which is converted into the kinetic energy and results in injury such as from a fall.
What is projectile?
Any object propelled by force such as a bullet by a weapon.
What is pulmonary blasts injuries?
Pulmonary trauma resulting from short range exposure to the detonation of explosives.
What is revised trauma score?
A scoring system used for patients with head trauma
What is trajectory?
The path a projectile takes once it is propelled
What is trauma emergencies?
emergencies that are the result of physical forces applied to a patients body
What is trauma score?
A score from 1 to 16 with 16 being the highest score. It relates to the likelihood of a patient survival with the exception of a severe head injury. It takes into account the glasgow coma scale, respiratory rate, respiratory expansion, systolic blood pressure, and capillary refill.
What is tympanic membrane?
The eardrum, a thin, semi transparent membrane in the middle ear that transmit sound vibration to the internal ear by means of auditory ossicles.
What is work?
The measure of force over distance.
What are the three collisions?
- ) The collision of the car against another car, treat or some other object.
- ) The collision of the passenger against the interior of the car
- ) The collision of the passengers internal opens against the solid structures of the body.
What are the four types of motorcycle impact?
- ) Head on crash
- ) Angular crash
- ) Ejection
- ) Controlled crash
