Topical Ocular Anesthetics:
Cocaine
Tetracaine

most common used topical ocular anesthetic because of very few side effect
Proparacaine 0.5% - 1% (ALCAINE)
onset of action of proparacaine:
10-20 sec
duration of action:
10 - 20mins
does not penetrate the cornea and conjunctiva

uses of proparacaine:
- tonometry & Gonioscopy
- minor conjunctival & corneal procedures
proparacaine dosage/solution:
0.5% - 1% Proparacaine
10x as potent as cocaine
10x more toxic as procaine
Tetracaine
tetracaine dosage/solution:
0.5% tetracaine
uses of Tetracaine:
- Corneal scraping
- ERG
- Foreign body removal
- Gonioscopy
- Paracentesis
- Suture removal
- Tonometry
Tetracaine side effects:
transient stinging & burning sensation
conjunctival redness
– alkaloids (lipid soluble) from Erythroxylon coca (natural-occurring), prototype
Cocaine
Exhibits both anesthetic & adrenergic agonist activity
Cocaine
available dosage/solution of cocaine:
2% / 4% / 10%
onset of action of cocaine:
2 - 5 mins
