given only once (OD)
Single Dose
– drug is given in divided doses within 24 hrs. (BID, TID,QID, q 4hrs)
Intermittent or Multiples Dose
– drugs are slowly released producing longer effects
Continuous Dose
– initial dose of drug that is higher than subsequent dose for the purpose of achieving therapeutic drug concentration in plasma rapidly.
This effect is achieved after higher dose is administered for an initial period of time
Loading Dose
– amount of drug required to produced the desired therapeutic effect
Maintenance Dose
examples of Single dose drugs:
- antihypertensive (Amlodipine) agents
- insulin/ Metformin for DM
- multivitamins
- cetirizine
- anti-glaucoma agent
examples of Intermittent or Multiple dose Drugs:
- Mydriatic Agents
- Amoxicillin 500mg (TID)
- Cefuroxime (BID)
examples of continuous dose drugs:
- IV fluid meds
- Pilocarpine
examples of Loading Dose drugs:
- Amoxicillin 2,000mg
- Amoxicillin 1,000mg IV
examples of Maintenance Dose drugs:
Amoxicillin 500mg IV
