Enhancement of drug effect Flashcards
2 drugs in combination:
Enhancement of Drug Effect
occurs if 2 drugs with same effect when given together will produce an effect Equal in magnitude to the sum of effects when the drugs are given individually
Additive
occurs if 2 drugs with the same effect, when given together will produce an effect Greater in magnitude to the sum of effects when the drugs are given individually
Synergism
– occurs if 1st inactive drug lacking an effect of its own, increases the effect of the 2nd active drug but NO same effect
Potentiation
Ampicillin + Amoxicillin → both broad spectrum penicillin
Additive
Enhancement of drug effect when NSAID-ibuprofen is combined with paracetamol:
Synergism
Enhancement of drug effect of combination of echothiopate with phenylephrine at the pupil
antagonism
Enhancement of drug effect when vasopressor agent -adrenaline (Epinephrine) is incorporated with local anesthetic agent lidocaine:
potentiation
Enhancement of drug effect of combination of atropine with physostigmine:
Antagonism
Enhancement of drug effect of combination of pilocarpine with epinephrine at the pupil:
Antagonism
Enhancement of drug effect if NSAID- Ibuprofen is combined with NSAID-mefenamic acid:
Additive
